With coastlines marked with fjords and deep inlets carved by glaciers, Iceland is a land known for its iconic beauty. Reforestation in Iceland will help restore degraded lands and enhance biodiversity. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Restore degraded lands to native woodlands
- Enhance biodiversity by creating habitat
- Engaging the local community with recreational spaces
- While Iceland used to have up to 40% forest cover centuries ago, deforestation has reduced this to just 0.5% today. The area is degraded former grazing land with low-growing and largely non-continuous vegetation, and a lot of ecological potential to become a forest once again.
- A mixed-species forest will provide enriched biodiversity for most species' groups, including considerable birch at the edges, pine in the poorest areas, spruce on the better sites and black cottonwood along streams. There will be open areas for shade-intolerant plants and open-ground birds to remain in the area. The forest will moderate stream fluctuations creating better conditions for freshwater organisms including many insects, small crustaceans and fish. The forest will make its contribution to carbon sequestration, which will be a reversal of the current emissions. Local people will get jobs in fence maintenance and planting the trees.

Why Plant in Iceland?
Restore Degraded Land
By planting trees, this project will help to restore degraded lands across Iceland, promoting more forest cover and increasing access to woodland areas for many local communities. With time, footpaths and other outdoor recreation facilities will be developed.
Enhance Biodiversity
Trees provide habitats for many different wildlife species. With each tree planted across Ireland, biodiversity will be promoted as forests and woodlands are restored. A mixed species forest will provide enriched biodiversity for fungi, other soil organisms, arthropods, birds and mammals.

Woodlands and green spaces provide local communities with spaces for recreation and help mitigate climate change in many ways. This project will help engage communities through recreation and education, empowering them to make an impact in their local forests while also understanding the importance of the surrounding environment.
