Portugal's native woodlands have been subject to deforestation and desertification for centuries, but there's still time to restore the land's natural forests for generations to come! Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Restore previously degraded land from fires and desertification
- Replenish water tables with the reintroduction of native species
- Utilize outreach to engage local communities in the planting process
- This initiative aims at reducing desertification, restoring deforested areas, revitalizing native ecosystems, and empowering local communities to restore their environment, as well as providing promotional support and visibility to continue the work of ecological restoration in Portugal. The introduction of native species will help ensure continued access to fresh water. Together, we can create a greener Portugal 🌲
As tree planting costs are higher in Portugal, we have aligned our costs to make sure we're creating an impact. We plant one tree for every $2 USD donated.
- This initiative is designed to have cascading benefits, including natural, social, financial, and inspirational returns. By restoring previously degraded land (from forest fires and desertification), and reintroducing native flora back to the land, we aim to restore water tables, prevent further soil erosion/degradation, create carbon sinks in the soil, and create a thriving ecosystem where native fauna can take refuge.
- A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We'll also send you reports on our Portugal project, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
- We plant a variety of native/endemic species that are suited for each particular biosphere. Some common species include but are not limited to: Arbutus Unedo, Quercus Suber, Quercus Robur, Quercus Faginea, Quercus Ilex / rotundifolia, Castanea sativa, Oliveira-brava, Fraxinus angustifolia, Populus, Pinus pinea, Laurus Nobilis, Prunus Spinosa, Salix, Myrtus (tarentina), Sambucus nigra, and Alfarroba.

Why Plant Trees in Portugal?
Restore Ecosystems
The deforestation of Portugal began hundreds of years ago, with the age of discovery and trees being felled to create ships. Through reforestation, fragmented ecosystems and remaining old growth areas can be connected, creating a healthier ecosystem and protecting the remaining green space.
Protect Biodiversity
Planting native tree species keeps the ecosystem stable and helps curtail the spread of invasive species. Portugal is home to a wealth of animals, many of them endangered or threatened, so maintaining their habitat by planting trees will help these species continue to thrive throughout the mountain range.
Engage Community
This planting project will make an impact for local communities, creating new green spaces and bringing volunteer opportunities with it. Community engagement can make an incredible impact for environment, and sustain Portugal's green spaces.
