If you've ever vacationed in a tropical climate, you’ve probably seen mangroves along the water. Did you know that these beautiful trees are crucial for helping the environment and protecting our coastlines?
Mangroves are wonderful trees that are tolerant to salt (halophytes) and can be found where the coast meets land in both tropical and subtropical climates.
Despite being trees, Mangroves have twisted roots and branches that look like thin stilts, holding them above the sand and water. These roots keep them safe from high-impact waves that come from the ever-changing tide. Their thick waxy leaves also act as a filter that repels salt from the water.
Not only have Mangroves shown to be adaptable trees, they have also proven to be critical for protecting our coasts, endangered species, and even play a part in helping fight the global climate crisis!
Mangroves are well-known for storing 5 to 10 times more carbon than other trees, which puts them at the frontline of the global climate crisis.
Planting mangroves makes for a great solution to combat the rising sea levels and extreme storm surges that are brought on by climate change.
Mangrove root systems encourage aquatic life to call these trees home. Above water, they provide shelter for cranes, eagles, monkeys, and tigers!
