Planting Projects

The project is harnessing local knowledge, providing economic opportunities for Traditional Owners and rural communities through seed collection, planting and long-term stewardship. This includes creating as many as 890 jobs across regional Australia throughout the five year span and engaging up to 150 Indigenous and Non-Indigenous business sub-contractors, seed suppliers and nurseries. In addition, the trees will sequester an estimated 4.25 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over a 25-year crediting period, equivalent to the emissions produced by 920,000 cars running for an entire year.

The trees planted will help restore wetlands, safeguard existing forest, and protect critical Amazon headwaters. Working with local and indigenous communities, the seeds are collected from nearby Polylepis forests and grown by local and indigenous people in community nurseries. Once ready, they're planted on designated lands to expand existing forests, or to seed new ones in historically deforested areas. By planting a "green ring" of Polylepis forests beneath the Andes’ melting glaciers, runoff can be captured and stored naturally, then slowly released back to communities below. This will help to stabilize their water supply — even during the dry season. In the process, the ecosystem benefits, people benefit, and an entire watershed ranging from the misty heights of the Andes to the Amazon Basin below is protected and rejuvenated.
