Nova Scotia is made up of rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and beautiful forests. Planting trees will provide noticeable benefits to the environment and community in the area. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Restore essential watersheds for soil stability and erosion control
- Establish a process for insect and disease recovery
- Impact local communities by providing outdoor recreation and education
- Reforestation in Nova Scotia will prioritize climate change resilience and carbon storage, in addition to resilience against insects and disease. This will be made possible by planting native tree species found in the regional diverse Acadian forests. This project will work with local reforestation organizations, watershed alliances, and land trusts to plant over 120,000 trees. Along with reforestation efforts, planting in Nova Scotia will create more opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities. Nova Scotia is home to two national parks – Kejimkujik and Cape Breton Highlands – that allow residents to get outside and enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding them! 🌲
- Our Nova Scotia project focuses on restoring forests to allow long term conservation for both environmental and community benefit. Environmental benefits include but are not limited to erosion control, biodiversity improvement, and reintroduction of a species that has almost been decimated. The reforestation will provide opportunities for public recreation like hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing trail networks, as well as a look-out point for tourists to view the remediated forest area. During the planting process, the planting site will serve as field trip destination for local schools to educate students on reforestation.
- A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We'll also send you reports on our Nova Scotia project, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
- We always plant a mix of diverse, native species from local nurseries. Since this project aims to increase diversity and mimic the nearby Acadian forests, we will be planting a mixture of conifers and deciduous hardwoods. The confier species include red spruce, white spruce, red pine, white pine, eastern white cedar, eastern hemlock, and eastern larch. The deciduous species include willow, alder, white birch, yellow birch, red oak, red maple, sugar maple, silver maple, black cherry, and pin cherry.

About Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is located in Canada's eastern seaboard and is almost completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The province's name translates to "New Scotland" in Latin because of its similar cliffs, landscapes, and climate. Nova Scotia is known for the crop production of blueberries, apples, grapes, carrots, broccoli, and grains.
Nova Scotia is also known for the forest harvesting of timber, one of the largest industries in the province. Forest harvesting contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and ecological imbalance. Most of the sites in Nova Scotia that require planting are old field sites that haven't had forest cover for decades and harvested forest sites that have not adequately regenerated.
Why Plant Trees in Nova Scotia?
RESTORE ESSENTIAL WATERSHEDS
Watersheds act as a drainage basin and a collection point for water. We will plant over 20,000 trees to assist in soil stability and erosion control.
PROTECT AGAINST INSECTS
The Hemlock woolly adelgid is an invasive insect that is expected to wipe out the Hemlock plant. Planting trees will increase density and diversity to the areas that are affected by the pest.
IMPACT LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Nova Scotia is known for its stunning scenery and outdoor recreation, like the Cabot Trail. Planting trees will allow more people to enjoy the natural beauty of Nova Scotia.
